Our Race Car Driver Visit

On Tuesday, the father of one of our student's came in to teach all of K - 1 about what a race car driver does. He created a Power Point with pictures of his cars and of past races. The students were able to try on his helmet, gloves, and other gear. They really enjoyed getting to see his race car! They even got to hear how loud a race car engine really is.

The Thompson family has donated 100 tickets to see a race at the Perris Auto Speedway. If you are interested in receiving some tickets for your family please email your child's teacher ASAP. They will be "first come, first serve". In the email please include how many family members you have so we can save your tickets.

A special thanks to the Thompson family!

Thank you,

Mrs. Spits, Ms. Carhart, and Ms. Jones

K-1 Happenings for the Spring

Hello Parents!

The third trimester is upon us and we have great things planned for our K - 1 students.

English Language Arts and Social Studies
We kicked off the beginning of our community unit on Tuesday by having a nurse visit all of K - 1. She shared photos and stories about her recent trip to Africa, where she worked in clinics, delivered babies, and remodeled a preschool! Our students learned how washing their hands will help stop the spread of germs and if they have to cough or sneeze to do it in their elbow, please. The nurse gave the students plenty of time to ask questions and share some stories. All of the children throughly enjoyed learning about doctors and nurses this past week. We plan to study one or two community helpers every week for 10 consecutive weeks.

Below is a list of the selected community helpers and the dates we will be learning about them.

March 13 - 16   Doctors and Nurses
March 19 - 23   Race Car Drivers and Veterinarians
March 26 - 30   Musicians
April 09 - 13   Teachers
April 16 - 20   Postal Workers
April 23 - 27   Dentists
April 30 - May 4   Firefighters
May 7 - 11   Police and Military
May 14 - 18    Librarians
May 21 - 25   Paleontologists

Although students will be learning about many additional community helpers, the professions listed will serve as the focus for the week. We hope that being aware of what your child is learning during English Language Arts and Social studies will help spark some creative homework ideas. Also, please do continue to work on sight word recognition and reading every night.

Math

Ms. Carhart's Math Class:
This trimester the student will be introduced to addition. They are learning how to add single digit numbers using counters.
Ms. Jones's Math Class:
Ms. Jones's class will continue to learn about time. Students will work on telling time to the nearest hour and half hour.
Mrs. Spits's Math Class:
This trimester the students will also be continuing to learn about time. Students will work on telling time to the nearest hour and half hour. Students will also be working on solving subtraction problems with digits 1-20 and commit them to memory.

Science
We are constructing 3D habitats! This trimester we will be focusing on the study of life science. As students learn about plants, insects, and animals they will be adding elements to their classroom biome. Mrs. Spits's class will be working on a desert, Ms. Carhart's class will construct a rainforest, and Ms. Jones's class will build an artic scene.
In 8 weeks we will select student experts from each class to present and describe their class biome to the other students. We are excited to get our projects started this upcoming week!

Art
We are currently studying Miro's abstract art and will begin our final product next week. In April we will be learning about the amazing Rembrandt and his classic portraits and use of lighting.

We are excited about a new trimester!

Thank you for all do,

Mrs. Spits, Ms. Carhart, and Ms. Jones
